« I adopted Akela on February 12th, and as promised here is an update. Akela, Cactus Flower as I now call her is becoming less prickly every day. Initially she had a few minor health problems to sort out - no doubt triggered by the stress of being moved from the shelter, but she is relaxing now & beginning to enjoy being an only cat. She has settled in nicely and although still very independent, I see an improvement in that area almost every day. She occasionally sits on my lap for a cuddle & a purr, but when she decides time is up she takes off! She still bites me occasionally when we are playing - she has yet to learn that a human hand is not a toy, but we are working on it. She loves to watch TV - especially nature programs. (She has two videos made especially for cats called "Feathers for Felines" that she enjoys on a regular basis - she even jumps up and attacks the TV screen). We also play together occasionally - but she is too smart to run after toys for very long. Akela sleeps wherever she wants, but more and more she gets into bed with me and settles on the pillow next to me. Her purring often keeps me awake! She has learned to enjoy being brushed and now purrs and turns over to allow me to do the other side. Her tummy remains out of bounds at the moment. She regularly suns herself on my bedroom carpet inside the patio doors and watches real birds (as opposed to those on TV) in the garden. She will remain an in-door cat and I will continue to buy her grass plants in the hope that she will eventually learn that they are a delicacy - not something to be ignored. All in all, we grow on each other everyday. She is excellent company and arranges to settle herself in whichever room of the house I'm in. If I am out too long she has something to say about it. I am thoroughly glad I adopted her and I hope we will have many years together.»
